I like Pokemon, and I like Inscryption, so of course I had to download this. As I expected, this was quite fun.
After getting past the hook, the game keeps focus by offering tons of choices, allowing for plenty of customization. The gameplay is set to hard mode, and it took me about 12h to grind into the endgame. At the same time, the game is forgiving. Make a bad choice? It's possible to raise a worthy card with another 1-2 laps aound the outskirts. This game is great at getting the player into the "zone", since most choices will feel like taking a great step forward.
Music was well-chosen and fit the situations. Loved it. I can't imagine any complaints, except from lawyers stewing over copyrights.
But I did have a few gripes. The only "big" problem might be the lack of plot. No Team Rocket or anything, and certainly no mind screws like the original Inscryption. Just cruising through Kyoumu. Not that I minded too much; I had my own little dramatic journey just trying to prevail.
As for gameplay, I was unfortunately unable to adjust my berry ratios, as the decrease button and scroll wheels weren't really working for me (although I did manage to decrease my berries by 1, but...). I also wasn't 100% certain on how the Tribute mechanic worked at first, but I soon realized that the game tracked who was sacrificed and who got the benefit by looking at the top border. And there's definitely grinding (I can't imagine a no Outskirt run).
This is definitely enjoyable, and I can see myself playing this again in the future. Very nice!
Howdy! I just updated to 1.0.1.1 and ran it, and I cant change the berry quantity like the notes from 1.0.1.0 say. It either does all of them or none of them.
Hello there! Make sure you're placing the mouse over the berry card, and then either use the scroll wheel, press the up/down arrow keys, or the W/S keys. Let me know if that works!
Before I download (since I see there's already an update version) how do you update the game? Does it auto update or do I need to delete everything and start again by downloading the new version or do I simply need to change some file names (these are some ways that I needed to use before that's why im asking specifically)
You can safely delete the previous version and download the new one. No installation of any kind required. And your save file is located somewhere else so it'll be loaded automatically!
um just to clarify do you just delete the application when you unzip the replacement file or does everything get replaced once you unzip a new file I just want to make sure I know what to keep and get rid of
Been loving this, but I feel like some things could be made more transparent.
- When giving the first glyph to a card, you have no clue with which berry the cost will increase.
- I feel like the harvest glyph doesn't stack with the tenacity glyph, if it does, the 50% chance of tenacity has failed to come through for the card with harvest about 15 times in a row (1 in 32.768 chance aka a 0.003% chance, in the case my brain is overstating it and its only failed lets say a conservative 8 times, that would still be a 1 in 256 or 0.39% chance). If it doesn't stack, whether intended to be this way or not, I have no way to know from the game itself. Maybe a more extensive glyph guide would help. (Perhaps in the same way the effectiveness chart is done, or simply showing a glyph and then next to it the glyphs that don't stack with it crossed out or something of the like)
- The tribute system feels inconsistent and as a player I feel like I didn't get any info on it except for how to use it. Is it better to tribute from a card with 7 atk than a card with 2 atk, or does it not matter? Same for Hp and Def.
Other than that, the obvious things come to mind when thinking of possible improvements:
- More gens, I'd love to see gen 3 and 4 added, those featuring my 2 personal favorite starters and also being pretty good gens in general.
- More regions, meaning more gyms and leagues.
Other things that I can think of right now are:
- A different inventory+deck UI, meaning more card filters (i.e. showing just the filtered type) a multi sell option and such things that improve Quality of Life.
- Improving the gyms, I've seen a lot of gyms go completely away from their typing, kinda throwing out the gym typing theme.
- A rival potentially? Maybe for a higher difficulty? I'd love to be challenged by a rival at random, or before/after a gym. Just adds more gameplay and we all love to hate that one certain character, right? *Cough* Barry and Cheren, I'm talking about you two *cough*
I know this is a lot, but I'm just throwing out ideas and I know that it takes a lot of time and effort just to create a great game in the first place, but I couldn't comment and not throw out ideas, if only 1 of these even gets taken into consideration (from the not obvious ones) I'd consider it a success.
Anyways, once again, have been loving every second I've put into the game, thanks for putting it out there.
Edit: I have FINALLY seen tenacity work in harmony with harvest, so that is a big +.
Thank you for all the feedback! It's definitely appreciated, and even though I currently don't have enough time for any big updates on the game, I'll keep all of these in mind for the future. Thank you!
Tenacity is supposed to work with Harvest. I'll look into it, thank you.
This is an amazing game, had lots of fun playing. Wanted to wait to write a review till I beat the game (yes i even beat the champion) and I wanted to say this game phenominal.
I will say that like other comments that some of the features seem hidden, such as not knowing that you can only put a few of some type of berry in since the up arrow instantly puts all of them in, or how a tribute will mark the tributed card with a small x on the top frame and *potentially* give the pokemon its giving its power to a heart on its frame to showcase whether or not it worked.
Other than these small gripes I'd have to say you have an amazing system here, the gameplay is fun and I think you managed to capture a good mix between inscryption and pokemon.
The core system is good and really I would love to see this grow. A.K.A more abilitites (sigils), more pokemon, more events, and in the future possibly even more leagues?
My biggest gripe is not knowing what cost I'll be adding to my cards during any sort of card modification events. IT DOESN'T TELL YOU WHAT COST YOU'RE ADDING before you accept it, which means lots of dilly-dallying around the same area just to add maybe that one type of berry you forgot to have to your deck (which also ruins your deck speed). THANKFULLY the dev lets you backtrack if you decide not to upgrade, but it's still left out of the blue what kind of cost you're adding.
Please add information on the card modification events that tell us what kind of cost we are adding to our card. I believe this was a pure oversight on the dev's part.
This needs to be explained better, that's not intuitive since everything else is done with left or right click. Plus the arrows are indicating that you should click. Feels more like a bug than a feature.
Really great job. Some feedback from my first hour - I cleared the third gym leader first try probably somewhat luckily. Now I'm in the fourth zone and massively under levelled, so get stomped by most of the trainers. Means it's very hard to earn any money to improve the deck to start moving towards the next gym.
Suggestion might be to make it so you can return to previous areas to train in case you find yourself in a zone that's too difficult. I see there is a timeline at the bottom so maybe that could be interactable to return to zones.
You can, below the selection screen on your journey you see the 8 faces of the gym leaders, on the left of that there is a button and that is used to go back, but that button is only there when you are in the city (at the gym leader selection screen)
Even though there's only one save slot, you can manually back-up your save files and then start a new one if you want! The save file is named "data.sav" and it's located in C:\Users\(YOUR NAME)\AppData\Local\PocketCrystalLeague.
Simply rename it to something else and you'll be able to play a new game. When you want to go back to it, just name it back to "data.sav".
So, if I change the name of the file I get a new save, but then if I name it back to the original, no data is lost? How is this done? I rename the original save file, so the game makes a new "data.sav" file?
I made some images and submitted them to SteamGridDB, it just has to get approved for listing. When it's available, they'll be here: https://www.steamgriddb.com/game/5329675
I am absolutely in love with this game, I am curious as what you used to make it, because I want to add even more pokemon to the game, Its great and i would love to see at least Gen 3 and 4 at least
I've been playing this for a little while now and have been loving it so far. Great work on it. There's a lot of things that could be added ontop or improved, and this is a excellent release for the game. I pretty much never play card games and have only watched playthroughs of Inscription and this has kept my attention pretty well so far.
I can see many ways this could be built ontop of or ways this could be further expanded, but my main concern is a DMCA. To that end, the biggest thing I'd like to suggest is looking into a way to make cards/glyphs and trainers/gyms/routes moddable. So even if you get a DMCA, more could be improved on by those who still hold onto the game and can spread it around via things like torrents. With how DMCA happy Nintendo and the Pokemon Company tend to be, I already see this coming a mile away and would personally like to request a way for this to be extended on by the community who will help the lifespan of the game.
Hi, I love this game. Absolutely well made game. I do have one suggestion though. A way to "recall" Pokémon in a similar fashion to inscriptions "dagger/hammer" function would be interesting and would potentially add to the tactics of the game.
What it achieves: Everytime you evolve a card (it must be a pokemon that can evolve, magikarp can evolve, but Charizard can't), it gets a little stronger.
How it works: You click on evolution when you are on the selection screen, then you select a card of a pokemon that has an evolution in gen 1 or gen 2, after which you hit the blue button to evolve it.
Fun game. The only issue I have is that glyphs are somewhat underutilized (as there's not much incentive to get them, they're expensive, and they generally aren't super useful). Otherwise, I like the gameplay loop, and it's fantastic. As someone who loves Inscryption, this is a great game.
Alright this is goddamn brilliant! One thing that bothers me is that there isn't an "attack all" button, or that nobody attacks unless you tell them to.
Otherwise I know I'll be playing this quite a bit, thank you!
I appreciate your support, but donations have been disabled to avoid potential legal issues. This game was just made out of love for the franchise and the community.
So far I am 4 gyms down with my blue/red deck and love the gameplay loop. My only issues would be that I would like to see the cost change when adding a glyph before putting it on and a more clear idea of what the tribute system does.
Really hope Nin- lets this one go for a while, it would be a shame for an idea as great as this to get swiped away
I second this, I've been trying to figure out if a certain distribution of stats on the tribute card has an effect on the stat increase of the other card, but I have not really found anything. I have this feeling that a card with a stat of 1 atk will not add attack to the other card, same for HP and Def, but thats all I have and its not even confirmed.
Same goes for the glyphs, I have no clue what berry it would increase in cost and that would actually be really useful.
Now I just need an online vs mode to play agains my brother and friends, and an android version to play on the go or from my tablet haha (I know I'm being quite greedy tho)
First of all thanks for releasing such a cool game for free!
I've played for a few hours now and I've really enjoyed myself.
I'm not sure if I understand the 'sacrifice' mechanic though. Every time that I use it it takes -1 HP from the host, and seemly doesn't do anything for the recipient? It would be neat if the changes were highlighted.
I'm a big fan of low cost/free cards - Magikarp = GOAT wish one could buff it without increasing the cost.
Looking forward to supporting your future releases!
It's not noticeable at lower levels, but Tribute boosts the card stats overall. The stronger the card, the more you'll notice the boost, but it doesn't matter at what level you do it, it stays forever. It can also be stacked up to three times.
And on the other hand, the card you got the Tribute from gets a little "x" mark at the top, meaning it gets weaker and it can't be upgraded anymore. Hope that helps!
This game could really use some sort of guide on how glyphs change the cost of pokemon. This is only really important if they require a different kind of berry when this happens.
Personally, I have found needing more than 1 kind of berry is just setting yourself up for failure. Type advantage is nice, but it doesn't come in play as often as you might think due to it only being offensive. Your big hitters tend to overkill anyway.
Might be more worthwhile if there was a 4th berry type, sitrus or something, that acts as a wild berry (aka all berry types).
Thank you for the amazing game! I had a blast playing it! I hope you continue to develop it.
Hey, so when I tried to open the game my Norton freaked out and tried to stop me, but I was able to run it anyway. But when I tried to switch into fullscreen mode, Norton freaked out again and closed the game and removed it from my computer entirely, which forced me to restart my comp if I wanted to play it again.
So I do have a screenshot to share that explains the problem. Basically, I was versing the first gym leader and we had used up all of our cards and berries. Our pokemon were doing 5 damage each turn but not on each other, so we were taking damage and healing that exact damage each turn. We were basically trapped in an endless loop unless I eventually gave up and resigned the match.
This is incredible! Thank you so much for making it, I've been dying for someone to make a Pokemon deckbuilder. Really amazing job.
You probably know this already, but there seems to be scenarios where you are stuck in an infinite stalemate where neither opponent can do anything to win. The only way out to is to declare a Stalemate. This seems to happen especially if you're out of cards/berries and all Pokemon on the field are fighting unopposed. Unsure you were to planning to change anything about that, just wanted to let you know!
Yeah, I couldn't think of a clever way to get around that without making big gameplay changes, so I just added a "declare stalemate" button. Luckily it doesn't happen too often.
But thank you so much, I'm really glad you're enjoying the game!
Thank you! I'm trying to get back into rhythm once again. But yeah, I made a post about that other game some time ago— basically, it was just waaaay too big of a project for me right now. I just couldn't keep working on it, for various reasons. It just had no end in sight and it was stressful to deal with a project that big while also trying to make a living. So I decided to focus just on art (and smaller projects like this one), at least for now.

Thank you so much! I'm genuinely glad you enjoyed the game, and I really appreciate all the feedback. Thanks, and congratulations on beating it!!
With the newer versions you can use the arrow keys on your keyboard while you hover your mouse over the berry type to add or subtract 1 berry.
Is this inscryption?
Howdy! I just updated to 1.0.1.1 and ran it, and I cant change the berry quantity like the notes from 1.0.1.0 say. It either does all of them or none of them.

Hey there, loving the game so far. I do have a question, what does evolution do? I can't really see a difference when I evolved Cyndaquil.
You may not notice any difference at lower levels, but the overall stats are improved!

um just to clarify do you just delete the application when you unzip the replacement file or does everything get replaced once you unzip a new file I just want to make sure I know what to keep and get rid of
You should replace everything that comes in the zip! There's three files.
okay thanks just wanted to make sure I didn't make any mistakes thanks :]
Bro we need this on Android

Thank you very much for the response! You made an enjoyable game here :D
you can change it to a specific number, just hover your mouse over the number and scroll up or down
This needs to be explained better, that's not intuitive since everything else is done with left or right click. Plus the arrows are indicating that you should click. Feels more like a bug than a feature.
You can also use the arrow keys now!
This is so genuienly genius. Thank you for making this!

Ahh superb thanks for that! I must have been looking when out in the "world" area.
This game is very cool and easy to learn, I loved!
Thank you for making this.
I already beat the game and I would like to start a new game, but I do not want to lose my deck. :(
Is there any plan to make more than one save?
Even though there's only one save slot, you can manually back-up your save files and then start a new one if you want! The save file is named "data.sav" and it's located in C:\Users\(YOUR NAME)\AppData\Local\PocketCrystalLeague.

Yep!
Great Game! Thank you for making this.
Runs well on Steam Deck:
1. Download from the browser in Desktop Mode, the itch.io launcher struggles to install this one.
2. Extract the zip file to a folder.
3. Add the exe to steam as a non-steam game.
4. Configure the game to launch with Proton 7.0-2 in the game properties.
5. Enter Gaming Mode then launch. I recommend using the web browser template for gameplay with the touchpad.
Issues so far:
1. Seems to run in 16:9 and letterbox on the 16:10 1200x800 screen.
2. Hard to set the number of berries exactly to the number you want due to only using the scroll wheel. I'm unsure if there's another way.
I really want those in, please!
I've been playing this for a little while now and have been loving it so far. Great work on it.
I abso-flippin-lutley love this. It would be really cool to see someone develop this as an apk. But nevertheless, this is amazing.
Hi, I love this game. Absolutely well made game. I do have one suggestion though. A way to "recall" Pokémon in a similar fashion to inscriptions "dagger/hammer" function would be interesting and would potentially add to the tactics of the game.
This game probably combines the two things I enjoy obsessing over the most.
Is there somewhere where the available cards in the gane are listed? Something like a pokeindex would he greatly appreciated!
this game is surprisingly addicting but I can't figure out what evolution does
As in, what it achieves? Or as in, how it works?
What it achieves: Everytime you evolve a card (it must be a pokemon that can evolve, magikarp can evolve, but Charizard can't), it gets a little stronger.
How it works: You click on evolution when you are on the selection screen, then you select a card of a pokemon that has an evolution in gen 1 or gen 2, after which you hit the blue button to evolve it.
ok thanks
Fun game. The only issue I have is that glyphs are somewhat underutilized (as there's not much incentive to get them, they're expensive, and they generally aren't super useful). Otherwise, I like the gameplay loop, and it's fantastic. As someone who loves Inscryption, this is a great game.
Thank you!
One thing that bothers me is that Diglett doesn’t show its berry color outside of combat.
Anyway, this game is amazing!
I'm addicted to this!
Thank you!
Haven't played yet - sitting at work..but just absolutely jamming to the soundtrack.
Thank you!
Alright this is goddamn brilliant!
One thing that bothers me is that there isn't an "attack all" button, or that nobody attacks unless you tell them to.
Otherwise I know I'll be playing this quite a bit, thank you!
Where is the donate button?
Thank you, I'm really glad you're enjoying it!
I appreciate your support, but donations have been disabled to avoid potential legal issues. This game was just made out of love for the franchise and the community.
Is anyone else having trouble downloading? javascript:void(0); is making me think it might have been taken down :(
Such a great game, really having fun with it!

But when I tried to switch into fullscreen mode, Norton freaked out again and closed the game and removed it from my computer entirely, which forced me to restart my comp if I wanted to play it again.
Antivirus sometimes freak out for no reason. You can make an exception inside your antivirus settings if it won't let you play the game normally.
Thanks for checking out the game!
Hey, this game is great! But I suspect that I've encountered a soft lock. I don't know what the process is but is there some way I can share bugs?
Oh no! Please feel free to describe the issue and I'll look into it.
Thank you. This is a stalemate, and the only workaround for it currently is the "declare stalemate" button. It's not a frequent situation, luckily.
Love the game, I'm having a bit difficulty with the berry selection, it seems that it's all or none of the berries at my disposal?
*Edit* If anyone is having this problem the answer is... scroll wheel!
Hey there! Seems you figured it out before I could answer, but yeah! Thank you so much!
I would love to learn how you built it. I work in software and have been wanting to make my own card game in this manner. Did you use Unity?
GameMaker Studio 2!
how did you learn to do all the card animations/anything in game. Can you point me to a tutorial?
This seems neat, but I'd love to get a few more gens in here! At least gen 3 for my favorite absol haha. Still, super cool!
Thank you! I'd love to add more gens and maybe even more challenges eventually.
This looks awesome! Any chance it'll come to Mac?
Thank you for your interest! But sorry, there are currently no plans for other platforms.
Hey Moodytail! I'm happy to see you're still okay! You kinda dropped off the face of the internet for a long time and it made a lot of people worried
Also, uhm, whatever happened to that Mystery Dungeon game you were making?
Aww, I understand. I'm just glad that you're doing okay and that you're back to talking to people ^^
you had me at Inscryption. literally the only card game that I can easily follow and not feel like a utter dunce
